Is FlightQ the best daily airport game?
For most players, yes. FlightQ is a family of daily geography and aviation puzzles; its About page lists 30 games, and it has apps on the App Store and Google Play.
FlightQ's "Airport Wordle" is AirlineQ: you see a mystery airport's real airline departures and get five guesses, with distance and direction after each miss. SkyQ hides a whole flight route, while Livery and Airfield cover airline tails and runway layouts.
No account is needed, though an account syncs your streak and stats. Premium costs $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year as of October 2026 and adds ad-free play, unlimited practice and advanced stats. The main gap is that FlightQ has no phonetic alphabet training.
Choose FlightQ if you want the most variety in daily airport, route and airline puzzles and don't need to learn radio calls.
AlfaZulu: airport puzzles and the ICAO alphabet together
AlfaZulu is the app we make, free with ads on Google Play and the App Store. Its Daily Airportle gives every player the same airport and six approaches, and each miss returns distance, direction, region and country feedback on an interactive globe. In a browser at alfazulu.app, you can play the daily puzzle and a nine-question Checkride (three airport codes, three ICAO calls, three airlines) without signing up.
In the app, World Routes lets you pick a region or airport category, and Pilot Radio teaches the ICAO alphabet by typing or optional voice, then races all 26 letters against the clock. Solved airports become stamps in an Aviation Passport, and you can send friends airport challenges and ICAO races. The website also describes Spotting Deck, an airline livery game. A free pilot profile is optional and syncs progress. More about AlfaZulu.
AlfaZulu is new and has far fewer games than FlightQ. It shows ads, including optional rewarded ads. Pilot Radio and World Routes are app-only, and Airportle uses three-letter IATA codes, so it won't drill four-letter ICAO airport codes.
Choose AlfaZulu if you want a daily airport puzzle and ICAO alphabet practice in the same app, and you like collecting passport stamps as you go.
Is NATO Alphabet Learning the best phonetic alphabet trainer?
Of the apps we compared, NATO Alphabet Learning is the fullest pure alphabet trainer. It runs in a browser with no install, and it is on the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Modes include audio lessons, flashcards, multiple choice, typed recall, a shared daily challenge, time attack and survival. It covers numbers 0 to 9, adds Morse code, semaphore flags and maritime signals, and has friends, duels and leaderboards. Its website says the web version is free with ads, with a one-time €0.99 purchase to remove them; the App Store listing shows no in-app purchases or ads.
It has no airport games. Its site links to a Google Play listing, but that page returned "not found" when we checked on 19 October 2026, so Android users may need the web app.
Choose NATO Alphabet Learning if your goal is to master the alphabet itself, including numbers and Morse code, in a browser or on an iPhone.
IATA Airport Code Quiz & Map: best for exam prep and ICAO codes
IATA Airport Code Quiz & Map, from KazuTaka.biz, teaches codes by tapping airports on a world map. It is on Google Play and, under the name Airport Codes Map, on the App Store.
It covers three-letter IATA and four-letter ICAO codes (LHR and EGLL, for example). The first 100 major airports are free, and a one-time purchase adds about 1,300 airports, 50 city codes and 125 airlines. That purchase costs $4.99 on Google Play and the US App Store as of October 2026; prices in other countries may differ. It has no ads, works offline after the first download, uses spaced repetition, and includes mock exams for travel agent and cabin crew or ground staff airport code tests.
It is a study tool rather than a shared daily game, and most of its airports sit behind the purchase.
Choose IATA Airport Code Quiz & Map if you're preparing for a cabin crew, ground staff or travel agent test, or you need four-letter ICAO codes.
Learn NATO Phonetic Alphabet: voice drills that work offline
Learn NATO Phonetic Alphabet, from developer Xiang Dong (Dong Digital), is on the App Store and Google Play. You practise the 26 letters across nine levels by typing or speaking, then take timed challenges.
It also plays audio for letters and numbers, turns any word or licence plate into code words, and works offline. A premium in-app purchase costs $0.99 on the App Store and Google Play as of October 2026.
Google Play shows the Android version was last updated on 6 October 2022, and the App Store version is still 1.0 from April 2021. There are no airport games.
Choose Learn NATO Phonetic Alphabet if you want simple speaking practice without a connection.
Sporcle: quick quizzes for both topics
Sporcle is a large trivia site with apps on the App Store and Google Play. Its NATO Phonetic Alphabet quiz asks you to type all 26 code words in five minutes, and Airport City Codes asks for 16 IATA codes.
Sporcle is free with ads. Sporcle Orange removes them for $3.99 a month or $43.99 a year on the website as of October 2026; App Store prices are higher.
These are fixed type-in lists rather than adaptive drills, and formats vary because users write many of the quizzes.
Choose Sporcle if you want a quick self-test in a browser before or after using a dedicated app.
When should you choose another app instead of AlfaZulu?
Choose another app instead of AlfaZulu when you want more variety, deeper alphabet training, exam-style study or no ads. Four common cases:
- You want lots of daily puzzles. FlightQ offers about 30 games, including route, livery and runway puzzles, where AlfaZulu has a handful.
- You need numbers, Morse code or a trainer that runs in a browser. NATO Alphabet Learning covers 0 to 9 and Morse, and its full trainer works on the web; AlfaZulu's Pilot Radio is app-only.
- You're studying for a crew or travel test. IATA Airport Code Quiz & Map has mock exams, four-letter ICAO codes and offline study.
- You don't want ads. IATA Airport Code Quiz & Map has none, and NATO Alphabet Learning's web app removes them for a one-time €0.99. AlfaZulu shows ads.
Is it Alfa or Alpha in the ICAO alphabet?
It's Alfa. The FAA's Aeronautical Information Manual spells the A word "Alfa" and the J word "Juliett", and NATO's page on its phonetic alphabet uses the same spellings.
The ICAO and NATO alphabets are the same 26 words, which is why apps use both names. NATO says the alphabet was created in 1956.
How did we compare these apps?
We compared official store listings, websites and help pages, checked on 19 October 2026. We did not hands-on test the other apps. We included only apps available today and left out store ratings and download counts. Prices are as listed on official pages, mostly in US dollars or euros, and may differ in India and elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a Wordle for airport codes?
Yes. FlightQ calls its AirlineQ game an "Airport Wordle": one shared airport a day and five guesses, with distance and direction after each miss. AlfaZulu's Daily Airportle is similar, with six approaches and region, country, distance and direction feedback on an interactive globe. As of October 2026, both are free to play in a browser and both also have iPhone and Android apps.
What is the best app to learn the NATO phonetic alphabet?
Of the apps we compared, NATO Alphabet Learning is the fullest: audio, flashcards, typed recall, a daily challenge, duels, numbers and Morse code, free in a browser (with ads, or €0.99 to remove them) or on iPhone. Learn NATO Phonetic Alphabet suits offline voice practice. AlfaZulu's Pilot Radio is the better pick if you also want a daily airport puzzle in the same app.
Is the ICAO alphabet the same as the NATO phonetic alphabet?
Yes. The ICAO spelling alphabet and the NATO phonetic alphabet use the same 26 code words, from Alfa to Zulu. NATO says the alphabet was created in 1956, and the FAA's Aeronautical Information Manual lists the same words. The official spellings are Alfa and Juliett, not Alpha and Juliet, so a good trainer app should accept or teach those forms.
Is AlfaZulu free?
Yes. AlfaZulu: Airport & ICAO Games is free on Google Play and the App Store, and its Daily Airportle and nine-question Checkride are free to play at alfazulu.app without signing up. The app contains ads and optional rewarded ads. You can play as a guest; a free pilot profile is only needed if you want to protect your progress and sync it across devices.
What is the difference between IATA and ICAO airport codes?
IATA airport codes have three letters and appear in passenger travel, such as on tickets and bag tags: LHR is London Heathrow. ICAO airport codes have four letters and are used in flight operations: EGLL is the same airport. AlfaZulu's Daily Airportle uses three-letter IATA codes, while IATA Airport Code Quiz & Map drills both kinds.
